Google Click through rates based on position

We know the power of onsite seo, backlinks and other search engine optimization methods. They get you to the top of Google. Depending on how well a campaign does the higher your search position ends up being. So you end up on the first page of Google for your highly researched keywords and you are just waiting for the traffic to roll in and make you all that money. Then you start to wonder “How many people actually click 1st place, 2nd place and all the way down?” and “Does it really make a difference to be 1st or 2nd or 3rd as far a traffic goes?” Let’s take a look at those numbers and answer those burning questions. There are no current stats to show what has happened in the last few years but a study in 2006 showed that the difference between positions is enough to open your eyes and work extra hard to achieve first place. Now these figures may have slightly changed since we live in a world of multi-tab browsing yet they do show just how proper SEO of your website is. If you reach 1st place in Google Organic search you will receive approximately 42% of all the clicks. This number was surprising low when you think about. One would have guessed this number to be in the 80% range or so.

The next staggering result is the google click through rate for the 2nd position. You would think that if 42% percent click on 1st place than 2nd would give at least 30%. In today’s multiple tab browser’s it is all too easy to open the top 5 searches and find the one that suits your needs best. Again this is not the case. Only about 12% of all users will click the 2nd search position. That is a 70% drop in traffic from first to second. That is astronomical when you consider popular search terms. After that the drop off is quite proportionate:
  • #3  gives you 8.5%
  • #4  gives you 6%
  • #5  gives you 5%
  • #6  gives you 4%
  • #7  gives you 3.4%
  • #8  gives you 3%
  • #9  gives you 2.8%
  • #10 gives you 3%
Interest thing to note here is that 10th place gets more click through than 9th place and equal to the clicks that 8th place gets. Marginally but still when you deal in volume it can matter alot. Now what about 2nd page and beyond? The same study showed that 11th place or 1st place on second page received only 0.66% of all traffic and it really gets ugly after that with less than 0.4% of all traffic. Unless you are dealing with search volume in the millions 2nd page really doesn’t get you anywhere. What this tells us is that it really pays to take the time to do proper SEO and get yourself as high as you really can. Obviously 1st place on Google is the holy grail but anywhere on the first page will get you some good targeted traffic. If you need to buy backlinks or an affordable seo company do not hesitate to contact me for a free consultation and let’s get you to that 1st spot on google now that you have seen the Google click through rates by position.

To get this high PR backlink just create an account and add your links and anchor text to your signature. It’s as easy as that. Now I often get asked what if my website has nothing to do with software or blogging or anything like that. Well it has been proven over and over again that Google will take a authoritive backlink over a lower PR niche link. That means you could spend hours digging for obscure blogs that are in your niche and post tons of comments with your anchor link while somone uses this free high pr backlink and they will get more Google love than you will with blog commenting. Now I am not saying you shouldn’t blog comment. There are many great links to be had but never discount the power of a free high pr backlink like this one. For those too lazy or busy to create the profile and post their backlink you can always buy baclinks packs from my site and have them outsourced from just 0.50 per link.

High PR Backlinks is what it is all about with Google when you are trying to rank high. Here is a high PR backlink right from Google themselves to help you on your high ranking ways. Google is promoting their Google Profiles This has to be one of the best places to grab a hig powered link back to your site no matter what you do on the web.
High PR Backlink from Google Profiles

High PR Backlink from Google Profiles

There are actually two great links up for grabs when you make your profile. The first one is Google lets you list your homepage with any anchor text you want.  How handy is that? The second area to get some Google link juice is in the about me area. Right now Google is letting you write a short BIO about yourself and it allows for some HTML. Now I wouldn’t go and spam in there but a nice keyword rich text link is fine, something like I did in my profile. As you can see the path of the profiles is http://www.google.com/profiles/username which means that you are getting the full weight of the Google PR rank behind it. I am sure that Google will also re-crawl itself all the time so your link will get noticed and indexed right away. This is just solid SEO practice folks. If you are too lazy or busy to do the tedious link building you can buy backlinks from me. I have many packages available starting at less that $30 for 30 links. Contact me for details.

SEO Tools: Are we being fooled by these SEO tools?

I use just about every SEO Tool I can get my hands on in my research. And through my keyword research I start to wonder are we as SEO Specialists being scammed by the providers of these tools? Every keyword research tool and website ranking tool I use seems to be telling me something different. I was doing some additional keyword research for a client that was nice enough to hire a seo expert like me and I found some weird results. I started off at SEMrush.com and started research on thier domain name. I found a handy list of keywords that I felt we could move up in rankings and that had some decent monthly search volume for a very specific market.  Our list looked like this.  For this example I wanted to use two circled keywords.

I felt encouraged by a few keywords that the client was ranking for but in low positions. Before I committed to performing SEO services on this particular set of keywords I decided I needed a second opinion on the subject. I decided to do a manual test on Google and see if the results were anywhere near accurate. Google search for my first keyword of choice: 28th place.  Thats odd since I was SEMRush said we sat at 12th place. Google search for my second keyword of choice: 5th place.  Again no where near the 13th SEMRush stated. Well I thought I would run the test again using the higky respected SEO Elite software and ran my tests again. I will share my results but unfortunatley Google returned the famous: NO Result that happens all too often with SEO Elite. The other search engines showed promise however.

Strange that these results don’t show anything near the manual search or the SEM Rush results. So where does this leave us as SEO Experts? Well the conclusion I have drawn is to use all the SEO research tools at  your disposal. In the end always use a manual search to verify results. If you see it on Google.com then it is as real as it is. Use SEO tools to make a general plan and then trust noone but google itself for your actual results, even then Google lies since these results are not verified by Google Webmaster Tools. I have found that there simply are no magic SEO tools. The best SEO Tools are your own brain and education.

For SEO how accurate is Google Keyword Tool?

Keyword research is a vital part of any SEO service and in the past we have been trying to accumulate data that show past search histories so that we can figure out what might be in the future. The process works like this. You head over to the Google Keyword Tool and type in a URL or some basic keywords that you are thinking about doing SEO for and then Google runs its magic and you get a list of other keywords and their approximate search volumes. Now these numbers are based on last years trends. So they take the total amount of searches for a particular word over a year and devide it by twelve which is the months of the year. Now this works just fine for some keyword research such as academic and business keywords. But what if you are looking up Christmas keywords or Travel Keywords. Don’t you think that “Christmas tree decorating tips” or “Tropical Vacations”or “what to wear to the beach” is searched for more often during one time of year than the other? This is when the devide by twelve method does work so well. Well now Google has launched a new keyword research tool that allows you to see monthly search spikes and also lets you forecast for the future. It is called the Insights for Search tool. I had some fun and played with the Christmas tree decorating tips idea and I could clearly see the trends year after year. No search volumne until October and then a massive spike in Oct, Nov and of course Dec. This is just another tool us as SEO specialists have in our arsenal to see what is really worth doing SEO for and now you can see when it is worth doing SEO for. With the forecasting I haven’t had a chance to play with quite yet on the new keyword tool but I will give it a go and cover it next time for all the SEO specialists out there.

Why did you start in SEO?

I was on a popular SEO forum today and the discussion was about why did you start in SEO and SEO services. It got me thinking as to why I do what I do. The real reason I love performing SEO services for clients is because it is a huge challenge with awesome rewards. You start with a client who has no on-site SEO and little if any website traffic. They hire a seo expert like me. You do a competitor analysis and create a SEO strategy that is perfect for them. You do all your on-site SEO by creating keyword rich content and proper link structure. Then you go out and spread the link love across directories, forums, blogs and other social media until their website is a healthy, thriving business that makes money every month. Its always fun doing what you love isn’t it?

SEO competitor analysis: Is it worth the SEO effort?

In SEO competitor analysis you try to answer the common question of whether it is worth the effort of putting in a full SEO services effort for a certian keyword. For example I was with a client the other day that was keen on getting 1st page Google rankings for a keyword in the Interactive Advertising industry. The keyword basically summed up everything the company was and continues to do. Once I ran a keyword analysis of both search volumes and competition in the keyword it was clear that it was not worth the money to hire a seo expert for this job. The first thing we did was head over to the handy Google Keyword Tool and checked if anyone was actually searching for it. In our case it was less than 100 searches a month but it was quite targeted and even one customer from those 100 would make the effort worth it. Once we ran a competiotion analysis it was clear that our SEO service efforts would be better used elsewhere. So how do you run a competitor analysis? There are numberous ways to do this but I use the same technique that is used in this simple training video. Most serious SEO experts already have SEO Elite and those that don’t should open their wallets and get in on it. Competitor Analysis using SEO Elite.
